Exciting news for our community! �� As of 20th March 2026 Dundas Veterinary Group is now employee owned. This means that the people who care for your pets every day now have a real stake in the future of the practice and firmly secures our independence for the future!

Dundas Veterinary Group have been proud to look after Edinburgh pets for nearly 50 years, with some of our current team members celebrating nearly 30 years in the practice. Emma Sharp joined the practice in 2008 and became a partner with Audrey Fearne and Sheila Cranna in 2012. Peter became a director in 2017 and the practice became family owned.

Emma and Peter have always strived to keep the independence of the practice and made the exciting decision to become an Employee Owned Practice.

As an employee-owned business we can continue to focus on what matters most—long-term relationships, consistent care, and putting pets before profits.

With the whole team invested in the practice, we can continue building a service that prioritises compassion, continuity, and the highest standards of veterinary care.

The day to day running of the practice will have the same familiar faces at your local branches. Peter Sharp will be joined by Rhiannon Moore, Will Chadwick and Matthew Saunders as company directors. Emma Sharp will step back from her management role to concentrate on clinical work focusing on her passion for geriatric care and chronic pain management.

A Day in the Life of a patient

Maple's adventure

Recently Maple came in as a day patient to get spayed and microchipped with us. Maple is one of our vets family members cat and they kindly agreed to let us take some photos to show the process of what happens when your lovely furry friends come in to visit us

Maple arriving at the practice. On arrival one of our wonderful nurses will admit our patient and get you as the owner to sign a consent form detailing the procedure being done. They can also discuss any questions or concerns you may have at this time

Anaesthetic and medication chart detailing the dose calculations for any procedures. It also records measurements taken throughout anaesthetics/sedation

A cannula is placed in patients leg so that we have venous access to give medications easily. This is why your pet may have clipped patches on their leg after they have been in with us.

Maple has been intubated and is on an anaesthetic breathing circuit. She has also had lots of monitoring equipment attached so that her heart rate, blood pressure, CO2 levels and temperature are all being recorded by nurse Charis.

Maple’s hair is clipped and her skin is cleaned to prepare for surgery

Our vets scrub up and place sterile gloves on. A drape is also placed over the patient. Once all our checks are done we can then start the surgical procedure. A nurse continuously monitors our patients vital signs as the procedure is carried out.

The procedure is complete and vet Claire ties off the final bit of the suture material. In neutering procedures the stitches are usually dissolvable and placed under the skin. However in some procedures your pet may have stitches that need taken out 10-14 days after their procedure. We will always let you know if this is required

After the procedure we monitor recovery from the anaesthetic closely. This is Maple feeling a little groggy after the procedure but enjoying having a little cuddle and some TLC

After recovery, time for some well deserved food in cat ward!

Maple is recovering very well after her procedure and is just as cute as ever

Practice Standards Scheme

We have once again received accreditation from the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme.

The RCVS Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) is a voluntary initiative to accredit veterinary practices in the UK.

Through setting standards and carrying out regular assessments, the Scheme aims to promote and maintain the highest standards of veterinary care.

It offers peace of mind to clients of accredited practices and a more informed choice to the animal-owning public.

To become accredited, practices volunteer for rigorous assessment every four years and will have met a range of minimum standards including hygiene, 24-hour emergency cover, staff training, certain types of equipment and cost estimation procedures.

Update on Pet Travel to Northern Ireland

From 4th June 2025 the Northern Ireland Pet Travel Scheme will be launched. This will allow the non-commercial movement of pet dogs, cats and ferrets from Great Britain to Northern Ireland providing there is no onward travel to the Republic of Ireland or the E.U.

To take advantage of this scheme pet owners can now apply for a Pet Travel Document (PTD) directly from the government online portal below:

Your pet must be microchipped to apply for the PTD. A Rabies vaccination, tapeworm treatment and an Animal Health Certificate are no longer required. The PTD is free to apply for and will last for as long as you own the pet. You cannot take more than 5 pets to Northern Ireland unless attending or training for an event for which written evidence is required.

When travelling, your pet’s microchip will be scanned at the port or airport. There are no checks if you are travelling from Northern Ireland to Great Britain. More details and up to date government advice can be found here:

DUNDAS VETERINARY GROUP ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY-CLIENT INFORMATION

At Dundas Veterinary Group we are committed to trying to reduce our impact on the environment throughout our daily running of all of our branches.

There are many ways in which you, as our valued clients, can help to ensure we can try to achieve this:

1. APPROPRIATE ANTIBIOTIC AND PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE USAGE-our vets are focused on providing the best healthcare for your pet and prescribe medications appropriately to their specific needs. In doing so our vets will only dispense the amount of medication required to avoid the unnecessary waste of medicinal products, especially with regards to antibiotics.

Our vets follow very careful protocols with respect to antibiotic use to help try and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance and minimise the potential harmful environmental impact.

We, therefore, do encourage owners to bring back any unused medications to the practice at your appointments so we can safely dispose if these for you.

2. RECYCLING OF MEDICINAL PACKAGING-as part of our daily protocols we are very conscious to try and recycle as much material as possible and are always looking at ways to minimise our waste output.

We welcome clients to bring back blister packs and packaging from their dispensed medications at their next appointment.

3. CONTACT & MILEAGE- we have various ways for clients to stay in touch and offer post op checks via pets app and email to reduce client mileage and environmental impact. When first registered we will allocate the branch closest to you and when possible arrange appointments at this branch.

LITTER PICK AT CRAMOND

The team had a fantastic day at our beach litter pick on 2nd February. We were joined by clients and some four-legged friends and collected lots of rubbish both on the beach and island. Taking in the fresh sea air as we went.

Thanks goes to The City of Edinburgh Council for helping with the picking supplies and also to Dog Aid Scotland for the support on the day.

Exciting News!

Our Dundas Street Reception area is getting refurbished this coming weekend.

From 5pm on Friday 14th February until 8am on Monday 17th February, our Reception will be closed.

Matthew has been qualified since 2006, with additional qualifications in Endoscopy and keyhole surgery. He also has a keen interest in Ophthalmology and is working towards further qualifications in this discipline.

Goodbye to Will

May is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month

The month of May is Veterinary nurse awareness month. We have uploaded a video to our Facebook and Instagram pages, showing the amazing job our nurses do every day to help look after your pets. They are the heart and soul of every veterinary practice!

Their job entails a huge variety of skills ranging from monitoring anaesthesia, taking blood samples, giving medication, blood pressure checks and taking care of our hospitalised pets. This is only a small part of their essential contribution to our practice.

We can now offer nurse clinics at our Dundas Street branch for nail clipping, dressing changes, weight management checks and some repeat injections.

Run 50k in March

RCVS Prescribing Guidance

The RCVS has updated their guidance for prescribing veterinary medicines which comes into effect today.

This updated guidance may result in more frequent appointments for some of our clients with the main changes being around the dispensing of flea and worm prevention and controlled drugs.

Pet Ambulance

MO HAS RETIRED!

Our colleague and friend Mo Clarke has now retired after 43 years of Veterinary practice. Mo joined Dundas Vets in 1991 and has dedicated her working life to pet health and animal welfare.

Mo was a familiar face to many pet owners over the years and it was lovely to see our clients at Mo’s leaving do at Broughton St Marys Church on Saturday 25th March. Mo would like to pass on her thanks for the lovely flowers and cards she received.

Staff Update

Vet, Emma Adams-Nisbet left the practice at the beginning of October to start a new challenge in her career. We wish her all the best.

Our new vet, Laura Harper, will join us in December, taking over from Emma at Granton and Dundas Street.

In the meantime we will have locum, Ruth Meagher, joining us to cover until Laura starts.

There are also changes in our Reception Team. We said goodbye to Marlena and Niamh in August, wishing them well for the future.

Erin Nicol joins us part time at Dundas Street, while Becca Finlay and Graham Middlemass have joined us full time, working between Dundas Street and Granton Road.

Exciting Additional Facilities at our Oxgangs branch

We were delighted to have received our first surgical patients at our newly refitted Oxgangs branch last week!

Boasting a dedicated operating theatre, separate cat ward, comfortable and spacious dog kennels, the refit allows us to look after our surgical cases for the south side of Edinburgh without the need to transfer them to our Dundas Street branch.

With digital radiography, digital dental radiography, ultrasound, in house laboratory and dental equipment, we are able to provide comprehensive care for your pets.

Laparoscopy will be available by the end of the year.

Covid-19 Update

Following Government changes in restrictions, we have amended our Covid protocol accordingly.

We are pleased to have our waiting rooms fully open again.

A facemask must be worn at all times and only 1 client per pet is allowed in the consulting room due to the unavoidable close contact with our vets combined with reduced ventilation.

Please do not attend the practice if you have any symptoms, are a close contact of someone with Covid, or if you are waiting for a PCR result.

By following the above guidance you will help to keep our team safe and allow us to continue to look after your pets.

If you do not wish to enter the consulting room, please make reception aware at the time of booking your appointment in order for us to have an assistant available to hold your pet.

Video Consultations

The RCVS Standards Committee has decided to end the temporary dispensation that allow veterinary surgeons to, under strict conditions and safeguards, prescribe prescription-only veterinary medicines remotely.

The dispensation was brought in during the spring 2020 lockdown to safeguard animal health and welfare, the health & safety of the veterinary team, and public health, by allowing prescriptions to be made by veterinary surgeons without having first physically examined the animal, subject to conditions and safeguards.

In view of the change in regulations we are now no longer able to offer video consultations for sick pets. If you do have any concerns about your pet, please call the surgery to book a consultation with one of our vets at the practice.

Parvovirus Update

Unfortunately we have seen two cases of parvovirus this week.
We continue to advise a top up parvovirus vaccine for puppies aged 16-20 weeks and also for dogs aged 4-10 months.
Dogs aged between 11 and 15 months can come for their first annual booster vaccination.

RCVS Accreditation

We are pleased to say that we recently passed the latest inspection from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as part of their Practice Standards Scheme. This is a rigorous assessment by the RCVS performed every 4 years to confirm that the highest standards of veterinary care have been attained.
We would like to thank our team for all their hard work to make this possible.

Parvovirus Outbreak Update

We have been made aware of a recent parvovirus outbreak in East Lothian which has affected a small number of vaccinated young dogs.

It is thought that this is due to a high environmental burden of the virus coupled with a small number of dogs that have not developed a sufficient immune response to the vaccine. There have been no reports of cases in adult dogs with up to date booster vaccines.

We have seen no cases of parvovirus at any of our branches at Dundas Veterinary Group.

If you are concerned that your young dog or puppy is at increased risk, then we are now able to offer a further Parvovirus booster vaccination for all dogs aged 4 months to 10 months.

Dogs aged 11 to 15 months can come for their first annual booster vaccination.

Coronavirus Information

This will also allow our clients to collect medications/food etc from the practice over lunchtime if required.

We are pleased to advise that from the 14th June 2021, we will be able to welcome our clients back in the consulting room.

The safety of our clients and staff whilst we provide care to our patients remains our top priority, therefore we ask that you please observe the following guidelines:

· 1 person in the waiting room at a time. Please let reception know that you have arrived and wait outside until the vet is ready to see you.

· 1 client per pet

· Face masks must be worn at all times

· Observe social distancing measures whilst in the practice.

· Payment by credit/debit card if possible.

· If you are self isolating through contact tracing or have tested positive for covid-19, please do not visit the practice and make reception aware via the telephone.

If you do not wish to enter the consulting room, please make reception aware at the time of booking your appointment in order for us to have an assistant available to hold your pet.

Fireworks and Bonfire Night

Did you "ear" about the mites?!

Ear mites are small mites, only just visible with magnification, that live in the ear canal of dogs and cats.

They are most commonly found in younger animals and cause irritation to the inside of the ear causing inflammation and an increase in discharge which is painful and itchy for your pet.

Here is an example of some that we found in a 3 year old cat.

Treatment is usually very effective and fast acting.

Endoscopy

We are excited to announce that we are now able to offer endoscopy as part of our diagnosis package.

Endoscopy is used to image the inside of the stomach and upper small intestine in a non invasive manner.

It is especially useful for inspection and removal of gastric foreign bodies and for taking biopsies from the stomach wall or duodenum, for example in cases of inflammatory bowel disease.

Please see the attached video, which demonstrates us removing a foreign object from a dog's stomach with our new scope.

They are having a hard time believing it but it has been 20 years since Emma and Peter graduated from Glasgow Veterinary School.

What a whirlwind it has been! Both starting in mixed practice in the South of England before settling at Dundas Veterinary Group, collecting many stories and anecdotes along the way.

It has been a pleasure and a privilege for them to have treated so many people’s beloved pets over the years and they look forward to many more.

It is true when they say that in veterinary life there is never a dull moment, which may well be behind the loss of hair and wrinkles evident in the photos!

Chocolate Toxicity

Signs of poisoning usually occur within 24hrs of consumption and include vomiting, painful abdomen, restlessness and hyperactivity. In severe cases there may be tremors or convulsions with the heart being severely affected.

Contact the surgery if you have any concerns your pet may have eaten chocolate.

An Adaptil diffuser can be very helpful on the lead up to a known event. It releases a pheremone which soothes your dog and is used to aid many aspects of behavioural training. It can either be used as a diffuser in the room where your pet spends most of his/her time or as a collar. Another product available is Zylkene. This is a naturally occurring protein which has been isolated and shown to act on various neuroreceptors which aids your pet in managing its stress. There are no known side effects. Zylkene must be given a minimum of 2 days prior to the expected stress event.

For those animals severely affected, we may also prescribe medication to reduce the level of anxiety that your pet is feeling. We do not recommend using sedatives as they do not reduce anxiety and only serve to limit your dogs ability to express his fear.

Other general tips include closing the curtains and playing some background music to help mask the sound of the fireworks. Making a den for the dog to feel safe eg under the table can also help. The hardest part is to try and not make a fuss if your dog is fretting as this will only reinforce their behaviour. It is best to reward them with attention once he is starting to relax again.

With the warmer weather upon us, it is a good time to remember parasite control for our pets – what do we need to protect them against and why.

Parasites can live internally and externally and are an all year round threat to our pets’ health.

Let’s meet the common culprits!

FLEAS

The most common external parasite on dogs and cats the flea spends a lot of it’s life cycle in the environment. Approximately only 5% of the flea population lives on your pet, the remaining are found as eggs, larvae and pupae in the environment including the outdoor vegetation and in our houses.

A single adult female flea can lay up to 40 eggs per day with a 3-4 week development stage.This means that within one month of a flea entering your home there could be an infestation of 2400 fleas!

Fleas also carry tapeworm and therefore can transmit this to your dog or cat.

TICKS

The second most common external parasite is the tick. Numbers increase between Spring and Autumn as the weather warms and they are now prevalent in both urban and rural areas.

Ticks cling to our pets as they brush against grass and attachment is immediately followed by feeding from the animal’s blood. This causes irritation and can sometimes lead to painful abscesses. An adult tick can attach and feed for up to 10 days.

ROUNDWORMS

These unpleasant worms are internal parasites and remain unseen. Up to 30% of dogs and 70% of puppies are infected with Toxocara Canis, the roundworm. 1 in 4 cats carry Toxocara Cati and shed eggs contaminating the environment.

Roundworms pose a significant public health threat particularly in the young and immune compromised adult causing ill health and potentially blindness.

TAPEWORMS

Cats are at high risk of becoming infected with tapeworm by eating rodents and other carriers as well as being transmitted by fleas as previously mentioned.

There are various treatments to prevent and treat these horrid parasites. Please contact the surgery to find out which product best suits your pet’s needs.

A fond farewell

We would like to take this opportunity to say a fond farewell to our colleague and friend Sheila Cranna.

She took the decision to retire from the practice this year to spend more time with her family.

She will be missed by both clients and staff alike, and we wish her every happiness for the future.

Peter Sharp, who will be a familiar face to our Lochend Road clients, will join his wife, Emma, as co director.

Jane Scott who has been with the practice for 19 years, will continue to consult at the Granton Road surgery and will be joined by our new vet, Kate Cheeseman, who will take over Sheila’s clinics.

Dundas Veterinary Group will continue to provide a personal, caring and professional service for all our clients building on the past achievements over the last 40 years.

In Veterinary practice we have the privilege of seeing and treating all ages of pets. Whilst there can be nothing cuter than the first puppy or kitten consult, we must not overlook the importance of the other end of the age range – our geriatric patients. These pets have been part of our lives for many years, often accompanying us through major life events and we must ensure that they continue to receive the right level of care as they go through the inevitable ageing process.

A cat can start showing signs of old age from 11 years old and a dog at 8 years old although this can be very variable between breeds. The signs can be both physical and / or behavioural.

One of the most common physical changes that we see is the development of osteoarthritis.

Cats can be subtle in their clinical signs so owners should look for these carefully. Examples include:

Dogs are usually a little easier to read and so the perception of pain is quicker but signs include:

Cognitive changes are becoming more recognized now as our patients are living longer than ever before. The situation can quickly become very difficult for owners to manage causing a breakdown in the close relationship they once had due to frustration and often a lack of sleep that they may cause.

Cats frequently become more vocal and show repetitive activity especially at night.

Dogs may show confusion with a loss of recognition and interest in their environment. They may also experience increased anxiety for example when being left alone which can be perceived as neediness.

As mentioned previously, these behavioural changes can also cause inappropriate toileting issues, which can further disrupt the bond between owner and pet.

So what can we do to help?

Firstly clinical examination and a basic blood screen can rule out underlying diseases such as liver disease, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism in cats to name but a few. All of these are common in our elderly patients and contribute to the signs that we have discussed.

Where appropriate, for example with osteoarthritis or thyroid disease, medication can be given to relieve the symptoms and very quickly improve the quality of life, which is the ultimate goal.

In summary, with owners and the Veterinary practice working as a team we can greatly improve the quality of life of our geriatric pets and allow them to live the long happy life that they deserve.

Meet a few of our “oldies”

Barney is a handsome older gentleman at the age of 13.5 years. He was struggling with stiffness and tremors but has a new lease of life after starting a combination of medication.

Harvey is one of our oldest patients at nearly 17 years old with numerous health concerns including diabetes, but with regular medication and assessments from us and changes made in the home from his very dedicated owner, he is still enjoying a good quality of life.
