Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a type of heart disease most commonly seen in larger breed dogs.
Studies have been done in Dobermans, who unfortunately have a high incidence of this disease, which shows that early detection and treatment intervention will extend the overall survival time by 34% (Protect Study by Boehringer).
Part of this early detection involves measuring something called pro BNP in the bloodstream. Pro BNP is an enzyme released by the heart muscle in response to stretching. It has been shown to be a good indicator of preclinical DCM in Dobermans and now Boehringer would like to extend the study to other breeds at risk.
Dundas Vet Group are offering, as part of this study, a free blood sample to large breed dogs to measure the pro BNP levels allowing collection of data from this group.
Examples of at risk breeds are:
Doberman, German Shepherd, St Bernard, Great Dane, Wolfhound, Boxer, New Foundland
Please contact the practice for more information if you would like to take part in the study.
